Catalogue Raisonné

Drawings from Gorky’s Nighttime, Enigma and Nostalgia series. Private Collection.

In December 2006, the Arshile Gorky Foundation began compiling a database of Gorky’s paintings, works on paper, prints, and sculpture based on Robert Goldwater and Jim M. Jordan’s The Paintings of Arshile Gorky: A Critical Catalogue (1982) and the research of Melvin P. Lader, who began work on a catalogue raisonné of the artist’s drawings in the early 1990s until his untimely death in 2005. Beginning in 2018, under the editorial direction of Eileen Costello, the existing research is now being updated, advanced, and supplemented so as to fully and accurately document every known painting, drawing, print, and sculpture within Gorky’s oeuvre. By 2020 the database will be available as a web-based publication with free public access. Much of the work will be represented by new, high-resolution digital photography and many of the works will be illustrated in color for the first time. As such, the Arshile Gorky Catalogue Raisonné will present the first definitive record of Gorky’s complete production and will be an invaluable resource for scholars, historians, museums, galleries, and others interested in the artist’s work.

If you own a work by Arshile Gorky and have not been contacted by the Foundation, we continue to review submissions. Please visit the Registration of Works page for more details.
