During the 1930s, Gorky executed a number of linear drawings depicting his friends and patrons.  This unfinished sketch depicts Ethel Schwabacher, who functioned as the artist’s student, patron, and first biographer.  Although undated, this drawing was probably created in 1934 or 1935, when Schwabacher took private 3-hour lessons from Gorky three days a week along with fellow patron, Mina Metzger.
